Watch the presidential inauguration at 12 noon on January 20 – or watch a replay of the inaugural address wherever you can find one. Find a text of the President’s inaugural address. Pay special attention to his use of the words “democracy” and “democratic.” In what contexts does he use those words? How often? With what issues, people, events, or challenges does he associate them? How does his use of them convey a sense of the character or mood of the United States at this historical moment?
OR
If you cannot find significant uses of either word in the speech, or if you find a word that you think central to his address that is designed to evoke common values or ideals for Americans and about which you would prefer to write, here is an alternative. Say what word (or words) you believe central, and discussed how the President uses it (or them) to convey a sense of the character or mood of the United States in this historical moment.
